Alex: Hello and welcome back to ClearTalk English! My name is Alex, and I am so glad you are here with us today.
Emma: Hi everyone! I am Emma, and we are super excited to share another fun and helpful English lesson with you.
Alex: Today we are talking about a wonderful topic that everyone loves: birthdays and special celebrations!
Emma: Yes! Birthdays happen every single day around the world, so knowing what to say in English is very useful.
Alex: Actually, Emma, I need your help today because I am planning a small office birthday party for our coworker, David.
Emma: That sounds wonderful, Alex! David will be so happy that you remembered his special day.
Alex: I really hope so! But I bought a greeting card, and I am not completely sure what to write inside.
Emma: Do not worry at all. Writing a warm message in an English card is much easier than you think.
Alex: That is a huge relief!
Alex: I also want to make sure I say the right words when we bring out the cake.
Emma: We will cover everything today, from writing cards to singing the birthday song and giving compliments.
Alex: And for all of our listeners, you will learn many easy expressions you can use at work, school, or with family.
Emma: Whether you are celebrating a friend or an office colleague, these simple phrases will help you sound natural and kind.
Alex: So grab your favorite warm drink, relax, and let us dive into our birthday lesson together!
Emma: Let us start with the most basic and famous greeting: Happy Birthday!
Alex: Everyone knows those two words, but how can we make our greeting sound a little more warm and personal?
Emma: You can add a sweet wish at the end, like: Happy Birthday, Alex! I hope you have a wonderful day!
Alex: That sounds very natural! Another nice option is: Wishing you a fantastic year ahead!
Emma: Exactly! When you say 'ahead', it means in the coming year, full of good health and happiness.
Alex: Now, Emma, what is the difference between saying Happy Birthday and saying Congratulations?
Emma: That is such an important question for English learners! We use 'Congratulations' when someone achieves something big.
Alex: Right! For example, if someone graduates from university or gets a new job, we say Congratulations.
Emma: Yes! But on a birthday, we usually say Happy Birthday, because growing a year older is a special date, not an achievement.
Alex: That makes total sense. Although turning ninety or one hundred years old is definitely a big achievement!
Emma: That is true! For a hundredth birthday, you can certainly say both Happy Birthday and Congratulations!
Alex: Let us talk about another key word: celebrate. Emma, what does celebrate mean in simple terms?
Emma: To celebrate means to do something enjoyable because of a special event or happy occasion.
Alex: For example, you can say: 'We are going to celebrate David's birthday with pizza and chocolate cake at noon.'
Emma: Or you can ask a friend: 'How are you planning to celebrate your birthday this weekend?'
Alex: That is a very friendly question to ask someone when their birthday is coming up soon.
